Ok, so Rik got the ball rolling today on the idea of us getting our own CoD4 server, about 32 slots. I've only had a quick look, but the first and most obvious place was multiplay, since they're old skool and have a really good server management system (the one we used for bf2, think its called "clanforge"), where we logged in online and could mess with the server stuff. They are also the mainstream, thus a bit more expensive. A 32 player server for CoD4, monthly, is about £44. There are some discounts if you pay 3 monthly, 6 monthly or 12 monthly. gaming.multiplay.co.uk/(click on "clanserver pricing/order" on the left hand side) On the cheaper side of things, i found this website. I've never heard of them previously. They quote about £30 a month for a 32 player CoD server, and also throw in a free 12 slot TS or Vent server. Again, significant discounts if you pay in larger monthly chunks. I mean, they sound good, but i've just never heard of them. But they sound good... www.clanplanet.co.uk/clan-gameserver-callofdutyfour.htmlThoughts?

I would prefer to use multiplay again if we can get enough ppl to gether to keep the cost down. Our bf2 server was from them, and i dont remember having any problems.
Don't bother with the free ts server,i wont be getting rid of mine.

Well I am easy on either side, so whatever.
I will pay for the one we decide on and we can sort out the rest later.
Lee, do you currently pay for our Teamspeak server?, if so a free TS one would be good.

I do pay for ours but when we give up the cod 4 server,we'll have to sort out a new ts server for all the other game we'll play.not worth the hassle.
Just remembered that the multiplay server took about 2 weeks to set up coz they were swamped with orders. So it might be worth asking how long it will take.

Rik just bought the £30 server. He reckons we try it for a month - if it's good, we keep em. If it sucks, we go with multiplay who we know are really good. He also took the free vent server, vent always was better than ts, but a bit more awkward to setup, so we should try that too (but dont cancel TS just yet, as vent is only 12 slots )

Ok, so the Vent server is setup and running, as is the game server. I have got the server setup, as far as gameplay is concerned, the same as the R*S one, in that its hardcore mode and the amount of points to win etc etc. However, i'm having a bit of an issue with map/game rotation. I can see in the server config file what you have to do to change map rotations etc, but there sems to be a cap on the amount you can load into the server at any one time. I know this because - i made an epic 64 map rotation list involving all 16 maps rotating between all 4 of the main game types, and basically the server will never load up when i load that list Whether you can just have multiple lists, and it goes through them in order, i dont know - ithink thats how it works, but i'll have to fuck with it tonight. In the meantime, i just left it rotating all maps in sabotage mode.

The server is up and running, thanks to Stu doing some work on it this morning. Si it might be handy if you had a tinker on it too, what with your knowledge. We also have a free ventrilo server up and running at this server address. ventrilo-4.clanplanet.co.uk Port 3883 so get Vent installed and we can start using that too

Is everyone moving to Vent now though, or staying with good old faithful teamspeak?

Is everyone moving to Vent now though, or staying with good old faithful teamspeak? not sure. Lee pays for TS himself, hes kind like that. So really if we can get Vent up and working all nice and stuff then it would be good, as its free in the server pack anyway

from someone who's used both (ahh i miss the eve days) i can say that vent is a better program. this isnt just me sayin "VENT > TS LOLZ". im referring to its features. you can individually adjust peoples voices and boost your own voice which was really handy. esp with people who have dodgey mics like me lol. i also commented at the time how clear it sounded for the bandwidth it actually used.
so i welcome a migration. either way it doesnt really matter i guess. but i do prefer it.
thats my 1337 cents anyway

As you (barnett) only venture on our TS server once every 2 months, it really doesn't matter what you think
