Can't post a huge thing on my iPhone, but a lot of the issues you had, rob, we could help you with.
All I was getting last night were the server-load based CTD's, which stopped later in the evening when the traffic died down.
The learning curve is about 2-3 hours if getting owned, then summat clucks and you can kill people. I put people down easily now, it's just practise.
Once the ea infrastructure gets fucking upgraded, life will be so much easier!

It still takes an ungodly amount of ammo to put someone down when standing only a metre away from them

Stu -
I have to admit, you were very helpful and got me over many of the issues but what really bothers me is that I needed that in the first place.
I have an ever growing issue with games being released before they are ready.
The punkbuster issue is frustrating but better than rampant cheating. Again though - it's something that simply should have been working at launch.
Si -
I agree - I'm regularly getting the first hit but end up being killed. I presumed that other people have unlocked more powerful weapons but it's damn frustrating.
Even worse is people seem to know this and I've had guys run at me and knife me whilst I'ven shooting the shit out of them.
I'd possibly be more interested in Hardcore mode. I preferred hardcore in Modern Warfare 1 and I think I'd like it even more here.
Can we all get together online tonight and play for a bit - maybe 8:00 UK time?

i should be on tonight (girlfriend pending). i'd just like to say though i wasnt too impressed with the hardcore mode. it just felt like i was playing a gimped version of the game. In MW2 you need it to slow the pace of the game down and think about what your doing. in BC2 you get that anyway. my two cents? Hardcore mode sucks for this game. also, some of the maps are quite big and i really miss the UAV, especially when people spot enemies. just stick with it fal, i was the same to begin with on another note. i found out why my game load times were so annoyingly slow. its a DX10 issue with ati cards just loading absolutly everything into my memory. forcing it to use DX9 should fix that so i will try tonight just for multiplayer. its also worth doing if anyone wants to gain lots more FPS (various forums have mentioned). Extra FPS in multiplayer = win. here's how to do it: bad company 2 DX10 to DX9 Go to the folders My Documents->BFBC2
Go open settings.ini with notepad
Change value of ‘DxVersion = Auto’ to ‘DxVersion = 9’
Save the ini file.
... send internets to the usual place pls

Hardcore, for me, is game mode dependant.
On rush/conquest, it's fucking annoying. You get killed every 2 seconds from snipers/tanks/blackhawks/apc's/noob-tubes.
However, on the more infantry-focused squad rush and squad deathmatch, it feels right and slows the pace accordingly. I'll be on tonight, we can experiment with server settings...

So after resigning myself to not being able to play bad company in any meaningful way, I decided to satisfy my curiousity and join an empty server to try out helicoptering.
I managed to get into one, and crashed around 4 / 5 times in a row, then some tosser joined the server (now 2 of us) and repeatedly blew me up as I tried to take off.
So I'm completely fed up at this stage, I've failed at flying, but that dick annoyed me so I joined another empty server. The problem I was having was invert controls on flight. It's a disgrace how they have implemented change of controls for flight, it's all based on mouse movement and 95% of the time it get's the direction wrong. Very consoley - very bad.
Anyway, I found a way in the main menu to change master flight controls and got cracking.
Flight seems to be a lot more 'slow and steady' than 'fast and furious' as was the case in BF2142. You can't really race around anymore, and it does feel more like a mobile platform than a fast attack copter. You can generate fairly reasonable speed but I get the feeling that this isn't what it's all about.
Anyway- I'm able to take off and land at will, I can hover and make a fairly quick get away. I need to see how it works in action before i get too excited, but I think I have the hang of it now.
When I left that game, I said I'd give it one more try joining the server. Man was I glad I did.
"I just can't quit you"...
Bad Company is like a gay cowboy, when you start you just can't stop. I have to say, the foliage, destructable structures and general team movement game is amazing. When I figured out how to take other peoples gear I was picking up weapons with a little more stopping power too.
Had a great time in the 3/4 campaigns we rocked - looks very fun. Still a cheap shot in some ways and annoying that the game requires so much external tweaking - but fuck me it's fun.

I did notice you suddenly "appeared" on the server last night The fun is in playing with people you know, on teamspeak, so coordination and communication is quick and simple. Dead? "André, need a rez!" and I'm back in. Low ammo? "Si, ammo plz!!1" and I'm good to go. Where to attack? "let's hit B" we move together, take the point, win. It's great when it comes together. We'll test out your l33t ch0pp3r sk1llz with a blackhawk asap, circle the base and let the gunners rape the poor people below

I can't actually play the game on my own - It bores me. Playing with people you know is why it's fun for me!

Si -
I'll aim to be on tonight - should be around 8'ish.
Can we make some understanding that if 2/3 people are unable to get onto the Guild server - we might all jump onto another server. As you say - it aint much fun solo.
I'll teamspeak up and be good to go as soon as I can manage.
Also - what is the difference between Assault and Support. Support has rocket launchers - an equally cool machine gun and it can repair.
Is ammo reloading all you get with assault?
Seems a bit meh, but what do I know!

Assault - medium/long range assault rifle (does more damage than engineers SMG's), grenade launcher (be it explosive or smoke grenades)/C4 if using a gun that has no attached grenade launcher, ability to resupply team-mates.
Good for frontline combat, can handle most combat situations.
Engineer - Support class/Anti-vehicle guy, not really frontline combatant. Uses SMG's, ok for short/medium range. Can use mines or rocket launchers for anti-vehicle capability. Have seen players successfully use this class with shotguns. Can use repair tool to repair friendly vehicles.
Works best vs vehicles when the vehicle is tagged by a tracer dart (increased damage/chance to hit).
In a straight up 1v1 fight, the assault guy has the edge with a longer range/ harder hitting weapon and noobtube. The engineer has a good CQB gun and will blow the fuck out of your tank. Different playstyles, really.
I've unlocked everything for medic/assault, working on engineer now (SCAR-L ftw).

I've been doing some reading over lunch. Squad formations apparently are actually worth looking into in this game. They say that the best rear guard is a medic and the best front guard is assault.
They say a blackhawk gunner should always be an Engineer as if ure using it right, the chopper drops squadies on an objective that has been covered in some fire from the gunner and it should land / repair / collect at the same time when the objective has been taken.
Apparently recon isn't great for squads and should be used as first assault on an objective. ie: whilst you finish mopping up objective B your recon has already moved solo onto objective C to start laying supressive fire and hold people in the objective point for the main assault to come and clean them all out in a quick drive.
Initially I'm going to focus on Assault and will look at medic after that as you can't seem to have enough of them. I'd like to get used to working in defined roles and even start working on proper squad formations. From what I've been reading it improves survivability, esp if the medic is viewed as a key tactical element.
I'm really looking forward to some free-time at the weekend to get stuck properly into this.

My game has a lot of performance issues which I don't seem to be able to rectify. I put it down to my PC tbh, but still annoying.
The game seems to seriously favor snipers. I find assault weak as fuck unless u like lobbing grenades and pipe grenades.

When playing assult I do use a lot of grenades - They're very useful when up against squads working as intended (i.e. together, using teamwork) -- One grandes can take out 2,3, or 4 people

Smoke grenades = win. Sure, snipers are annoying as fuck and have a lot in common with a homosexual, but you have to remember; unless they're being played really well (ie - as a Recon, not a sniper, spotting targets, using mortars effectively, setting up sensor spots) they're actually being detrimental to their team. A sniper on the assault team, camped on some hill taking occasional potshots at defenders achieves nothing other than said sniper getting an erection, so he can crack one off. Any defender sniped will either respawn in 5 seconds or get ressed. The defending team has unlimited respawns, do it doesnt even cost a ticket. It's just 1 less player helping to push forward and take M-Com stations. The only reason Recon's seem OP is cause they can operate easily solo. The game isn't really meant to be played solo, so where an Assault can feel weak, it's really cause he just fills a role in the team. You need people around you in other roles (who aren't retarded). Since i unlocked the magnum rounds perk, dropping people has become easier. It's not as easy as hardcore, but better than default normal mode. And even though i'm not trying, cause points matter rather than kills, i've managed to maintain a positive K/D ratio

Even the slight mention of K/D Ratio is of no use to a team-based game like BC2 -- UNLESS, You're playing deathmatch.
