A movie version *could* be good.. But casting is too important - They'd have to get a really good, charismatic actor to play shepard. Myself, i'd like to see a film based on Red Dead Redemption - Never liked Westerns that exist so far.. Cheesy low budget goofy movies IMO.. A modern take on the western with more adult scenes and grittier realism would be welcomed

Ehr... there are some amazing and gritty westerns, any of the Spaghetti westerns are adult and gritty, something newer that is still excellent might be Open Range with Costner and Duvall.
I would say that Westerns are probably one of the strongest genre of cinema in terms of overall quality. Also - if you want an upbeat posse style movie try Silverado - great flick!
Mass Effect Movie - doesn't get me excited but am sure it could be fun. That said - it will be pitched to the GI Joe demographic of 'Retards need Shiney' as opposed to having any pure sci-fi depth or thoughtfulness.

Fal, I will check out Silverado.
I've also got to check out "The Wild Bunch" -- Apparently it's the movie that Red Dead is "based on".. I.E. Man is forced to hunt down previous gang members by government officials.

The only western worth the time of day, and one of my all time favourite films;
Motherfucking Tombstone.
Let's get some beers and watch it tonight, si. It's phenominal. Val Kilmer as doc holliday = win.

Val Kilmer as doc holliday = win. Sounds good. From 1993 either. I don't want to brand myself as someone who won't give old films a chance, but my problem with Westerns is that most of them were made in the 60's.. And I can't stand a lot of the acting methods of that time and earlier. 40's being the worst era!

Si - your taste in cinematic genre is horrific. Classicly trained actors and theatre actors populated the silver screen upto the 80s, instead of the dross bland 1 dimensional tossers, hiding behind technology that we have now.
Back in the day, actors had to make movies work as cinematography was in it's infancy. Honestly dude - you couldn't be more wrong.
Tombstone isn't bad - but it is quite bland. If you want a great, gritty western try Unforgiven. It's modern enough that Si won't have to concentrate too hard.
EDIT: Jesus Si - I still can't believe you think Actors in the 40's - 60's are bad. Have you watched TV recently?
Go back and watch old black and white movies. Look how incredibly expressive actors are, watch 12 Angry Men (1957) Rear Window (1954) Some Like it Hot, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Cassanova.
Seriously. I'm amazed.

As I said, I try not to write things off instantly because they're old - There are exceptions to the rules.. But when I watch a film I like the full package of great acting and cinematography, etc. Watching films from the 40's with there shaky wooden sets and theatrical acting makes me cringe though. I have Gone with the wind and Cassablanca downloaded and ready to watch as I've heard they are classics -- I'm willing to give them a shot. I watched Citizen kane (1941) and generally thought the acting, sets, writing and everythign about it was up to a very high quality... But I just didn't enjoy the film. Eraserhead is one of my fav films - That's from 1976.. But that incorporates all I like about film - Great acting, sets, atmosphere, etc - That just wouldn't work as a piece of theatre.

the closest thing I've seen to a western is Back To The Future III. as a genre, westerns are not something I'm naturally inclined to enjoy. however after reading some of your comments i'll pick a few from the list to try it out. Generally though, SciFi is where its at for me Some of my all time fave sci fi 'oldies' include THX 1138, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Metropolis, Solyaris and of course: Star wars IV, Silent Running and Alien.

I have THX 1138 & Metropolis ready to watch but I couldn't get into 2001: A Space Odyssey. My fav Sci-fi films must include: Children of Men, Aliens, Terminator, Terminator 2, Total Recall, Moon, Brazil, District 9, The matrix, Donnie Darko, The Fly (Remake), Eternal Sunshine. I think when most people think Sci-Fi, they think "Space".. But most Sci-fi I like is set on Earth, in the present day, or not too distant future.
