Anyone remember the original TV series, V? It was back in 1984 it was first aired, i remember it as a kid. The lizard men used to scare me In a nutshell, the human race is kinda oppressed and occupied by an alien race, and "V" is the resistance. From IMDB; "The Earth has been invaded by lizard-like beings from another planet called Visitors. A small resistance of rebels led by photojournalist Mike Donovan, Dr. Julie Parrish and mercenary Ham Tyler fight the Nazi-like reign. The aliens usually appear disguised as humans, and are led by Diana, their queen."Anyways, there's a modern day remake, the pilot aired this week. www.rlslog.net/v-2009-s01e01-hdtv-xvid-p0w4/#commentsGetting it now, shall see if it's any good.

OMFG I only recently re-watched all of the original, the mini series and the cheaper crapper tv series. I was thinking it would be great if it was re-made. How did I not hear about this. FUCKING IMBA WATCHING THIS TONIGHT. Gonna really piss off Jan - she never got into the original and I was watching it all the time for like a month.

Ah man, there was a trailer floating around on Youtube about 2-3 months ago that Terry showed me, but i guess we never shared it on here, lol Oh, also - the original released file, V.2009.S01E01.HDTV.XviD-P0W4, is fucked, there's missing footage apparently. Make sure you get V.2009.S01E01.PROPER.HDTV.XviD-NoTV (note the PROPER) or the 720p version to play it safe.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahjPQjQGdbUHere it is - Looks solid, the actress playing 'Anna' instead of 'Diana' has less charisma than Jane Balder does in her little finger. Though certainly hotter than the old Diana, I know whos nethers I'd rather plunder.

So, just watched it. It's alright actually. To be fair, i haven't watched the original for years, so i can't compare. But as a straight up pilot for a new sci-fi tv show, it's got me interested and i'll certainly be adding it to my weekly "must-views" along with Castle, Psych, The Clone Wars and Heroes

Stargate Universe - still not watched that.
Hmmmm....sell it to me?
Bear in mind i have not watched any stargate tv series for more than 1 episode...
Oh and, btw - how epic was last week's Castle? Gotta be one of the best. Nathan Fillion's "halloween" costume which he called a "space pirate" was his gear from Firefly ;D
"Didn't you wear that like, 5 years ago?" says his daughter.
Awesome.

I'll dl and watch tonight for certain. Might go on my weekly list of: Fringe Stargate Universe Castle Bones Southpark There are 5 episodes in and it doesn't really seem like the show has started yet. It's mature stargate, much more like an episode of stargate written and directed by the BSG crew. Basically they are on a large million year old ship they have no control off. So far the episodes deal with them trying to fix damage they cause just trying to get to grips with where they are. First 2 episodes are a double that deal in semi flashback mode with how it all started. From there it's basically all about survival at a basic level - food, water oxygen. There are no aliens in it yet, there are no other characters outside the original ones. Crazy stuff happens, people decide to go check another planet and are just left - ship takes off - bye bye. There are no hero's at all - everyone is bad in some way. Basically take Stargate - make death an active part of the series, take away the safety of the earth or a "home port", take away humour, take away more childish themes, take away annoying comical characters and add a healthy dose of Robert Carlyle as a quasi Balthar type character. I don't know what it is about the show I'm enjoying so far, maybe they are using subliminal technology but I've watched them all so far and will be watching the next one without honestly saying I'm totally satisfied by the experience. I guess so far I'm just curious to see where it all goes. As I said - the set up is there but I've no idea what sort of paradigm it's going to settle into.

Yeah and one of the 2 detective guys wore his uniform from "Generation Kill" and the other his doctor uniform from a previous show. Not 100% certain but I think the chick in castle was wearing the same jacket as she had on at the end of Quantum of Solace. Looks similar anyway.

Watched the first episode last night and thought it was really abysmal.
The litany of things they got wrong is staggering. You would think in the near 30 years since this first came out they would have learned a thing or two about prose, composition, cinematography, character development and suspense.
Nope.
Compare the first 1.5 hour segment of the original V to the rubbish I watched last night and it is unfathomable how they got so much wrong.
The original V had a cool starting sequence where Donovan was cought in the middle of a conflict whilst filming on location.
He had to flee a warzone and when he got cornered he just switched his camera on and pointed it at the enemy troups so they would think twice about shooting him on camera.
Out of nowhere - big ass ship arrives and it was cool and against the grain of the first 10 minutes.
In the new (also known as 'shitty' V) there was no pre-alien character development and the aliens just announced themselves as soon as they arrived.
The first V had this cool and HEAVILY facist undertone, where scientists started disappearing (see book burning) and anyone with a science background was harrassed - the visitors stating that they had cures for diseases and held onto them to make more money.
It was genious!
The original had teens in it, but they were written as tossers and acted well (as tossers). Guess what - bad shit happened to them and it was done from an adult perspective. The new V has anxty teens that are SUPER FUCKING ANNOYING.
I can't tell you how many target audiences the new 'shitty' V is tryign to satisfy but it failed on all counts.
As for the aliens themselves - it took an hour and a half of development in the original for any idea of them being lizards or bad was revealed. It was done slower and more thoughtfully and when reveals happened they had weight.
Now.. I know this is a remake and people are aware of what the visitors are - but they still could have taken their time and made it interesting.
The acting and diologue was fucking awful - don't get me wrong - the original had some terrible writing at times, and some god awful acting - but that was the 80s and you expected it.
Christ - they even used the 'can I drive' gag that is SO FUCKING OLD AT THIS STAGE.
Honestly - there was nearly nothing redeemable about this. I'll give it another episode or two to see if it improves. I don't know how anyone could have taken V - given it a budget and some fairly ok actors and made this absolute FUCKING SHIT. Honestly - is there no bloody creativity, originality or simply BASIC competence left in hollywood.
The original used media really well too - multi channel media recactions, the whole scock and awe thing was done really well - almost Romeroesque. In this we have 1 Michael J Fox lookalike tosser who annoyed me througout though got better later on.
Any positivies?
Some of the CGI was ok, the aliens seem cool from a special effects point of view - but they don't have cool voices like the original and they seem to have super fast reflexes.
The ships are ok but I prefer the original ones designes, obviously they are far bigger on the inside than just a hanger though which is good.
The uniforms from the original need to be brought back.
The birds are all hot - although SUPER FUCKING ANNOYING WHEN DEALING WITH TEENAGERS. SUPER FUCKING ANNOYING.
Anna (visitor leader) seems to have a bit more charisma than I gave her credit - when she gets mean she kinda does get mean.
The sleeper cells idea wasn't bad. The idea that they have been here a while causing worldwide strife at executive level is cool.
THE CLEAR OBAMA RAPING IS NOT COOL. Have an evil race show up and in one episode tie them directly to universal healthcare then show them to be MAN EATING LIZARDS is super fucking irresponsible when you look at the shit state healthcare is in in America. Have the Lizards come in and tie them to fucking insurance companies so americans can get a fair deal would have been the more equitable approach.
I give 3/10.
1 for CGI 1 for Visitor background concept 1 for Alan Tudyk from Firefly being in it
That is pretty much it.
Just to sumarise the negatives:
Terrible writing Terrible acting Cringfest ubershit teen storyline Poor / Impatient pacing Terrible reveals Too much CGI at times Clearly anti Obama - stupidly obvious at times Speaking of obvious - nothing is left to the viewer, everything is spelled out.
Poor Poor Poor.

Barnett, have you ever watched this? I watched the first 3 episodes back when it first aired, and for one reason or another didn't carry on. I just went back and watched the entire first season over about a week, and it was really good. I think you'd like it. You know i'm about 99% spot on with my TV recommendations for you, normally I'm currently getting season 2 now, which is airing in the states...
