Barnett. Don't be a retard. Japan's infrastructure was/is in a better position to be upgraded/modified because we blew it all up, and rebuilt it in 1945. Trains, roads, telephone, etc. All of ours was put up hundreds on years ago. They want to upgrade london's sewers to cope with demand -problem; it's fucking Victorian and won't upgrade easily. It's a similar issue with the phone lines, especially since no one company owns them, has responsibility for them. again again sheer boll-ox... I'm more certain Japan's interest in Hi-Tech goods and innovation extends from consumer demand and an interest in the harmonization between mankind and electronics. You don't see Virgin Media scratching their heads on whether or not to announce faster broadband... they have made huge investments in their network and will be offering 100mb+ in the near future. that's due to demand and thats good. BT are playing catch up because they have to. when did they ever innovate in the recent past? BT Vision??? HA WHAT A JOKE! If they wanted to... they could easily lay down fibre optic connections to street junction boxes and then have an ADSL link from your home to that box. now they don't have to for me, thanks to Virgin Media

The restructuring of Japans communications infrastructure was a HUGE reason they have broadband...
Along with the fact that their major cities are VERY congested -- They can supply a large amount of people with very fast broadband using minimal cable length.. And whats the contension ratio of this super fast broadband? a million to one?
Also, the japanese government gives tax breaks to companies that make the communications network in the country, better and stronger, wheras our government (like most others) do not.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLUS.. Purely my opinion here and SLIGHTLY off topic.. But faster broadband DOES NOT equal faster downloading.. Applications and games are getting bigger and bigger, especially as they're getting more media-rich.
Whilst trying to download Duke Nukem 3D back in the day on my 56k modem may have taken an entire day... Downloading todays games-- Napeolean Totar war for example at 16gb takes roughly A WHOLE DAY

Noob. The telephone and internet business is privatised.
So, what incentive does BT have to lay awesome cabling down? Just so you can then take up a super fast Internet package with some other company? We have a layer of bureaucracy to contend with that unfortunately is due to the privatisation if the phone business.
Cable is different. That's a private company spending to lay cabling for use with their service.

You know... about how this new technology should be supported and how legitimate high data rate internet use and will benefit us in the long run? but alas, as always we have gone off topic. good job

Well... OnLive has come on leaps and bounds. i've just tried the pc thin client app and it works ok considering they dont have servers in the UK (by ok i mean you can see how it works, there is lag of course). never the less i was able to play 30 mins of aliens vs preditor on my shitty old pc that i'm using untill i get my gfx card back from ebuyer. viva la revolucion! anyways, info on new hardware and controller to plug right into your tv can be found here: www.itsagadget.com/2010/11/onlive-microconsole-game-system-starts-to-ship-on-december-2nd.htmlhome page can be found here: www.onlive.comhopefully, they will start deploying this to the UK so i can get a better look at it.

i just played borderlands for 30mins, the first time using onlive. i had people spectating my single player game, giving me a thumbs up when i did something they liked or something funny.
at 1st i was like wtf, then i went into arena mode and did the same to other people. basically, you can watch anyone playing a game on the onlive system through a massive matrix style menu system.
brilliant!

Genius Video.
On the subject of OnLive - I don't like the idea.. But it may increase the awareness of the PC as a games machine for the masses -- Instant access to any game, No installs, no high-spec requirements..
But probably not because you're never purchasing a game, only buying a license to stream the game.. so "sales" won't count and no resurgence will occur.

i really can't understand peoples resistance to 'the idea'. its fantastic. i couldn't care less if i don't have a box for the games. just let me play it. you own the right to play that game. they won't just pull it off the shelves. look at steam for example.
think about it, no more updates, no more upgrades. its a fracking dream come true and i can watch you play a game si. lol.
the fact the technology was working for me streaming from the states to the UK makes this real.
yes we need servers over here to make it playable for the masses... in time, it's going to change everything.

CIV V has built in mod support -- Mod browser.. Download and play...
Streaming CIV V would mean no mods. .Would mean a shorter play time before I get bored and move on.. That's bad value for money imo for a game like that.
Maybe for certain "Budget" games I wouldn't care.. .Given the choice I'd always prefer to purchase hardcopy over streaming a digital copy.

Guys - what happens if onlive goes bust?
Say bye to your £300 streaming game catalogue you shelled out for...

Guys - what happens if onlive goes bust? Say bye to your £300 streaming game catalogue you shelled out for... how is this any different from steam? you've just formatted your new hard drive after the old one broke and don't have a backup copy of all your games. steam / valve goes bust. download access denied. is it really any different? those games will be gone /sadface.

That's you r fault for NOT baking up your games! It's like installing from disc and then later loosing the disc.. At least with steam you still have a physical copy of the games you've purchased. If Valve went bust (doubtful) i'm sure they'd patch steam to be in perma-offline mode. OnLive is a new high risk strategy. If they go bust you lose everything.. Just like the people that paid for APB -- Shut down in 3 months and can never play again.. If APB were a single player game they'd still be able to "enjoy" and play it without the original company involved. I'm not against change, I just don't think this is the best way forwards. I think Steam is the closest way to the future of gaming.
