Ive been interested recently with the manchester music scene from the 70's to the 90's and after watching 24 hour party people (Anthony Wilson AKA Mr Manchester played by Steve coogan, very good). It had a weird effect on me, even though i haddnt experienced any of it 1st time round, the feelings i had whilst watching the film were nostalgic (maybe this is because ive lived in manchester for over a year now?). I wish i had been able to experience the glory days of the 'Hacienda', notably the various bands that played there and subsequently the emerging dance scene revolution. So i bought this to add to my music collection (meant to be quite good, not your average rave oldskool classics shite) www.amazon.co.uk/Hacienda-Classics-Various-Artists/dp/B000EF7WGG/ref=pd_sbs_m_h__2. I guess i'll also be adding various cd's from happy mondays and joy division to my collection as time goes by. Question for mr rik: Did you ever goto the hacienda back in the day? if you could list any good cd's / albums / info you think i might find relevent that would be bo'

Sorry mate, only just got round to reading this message. I only went the once, I used to go to The Boardwalk and 5th Avenue mostly. I did go to Discotech Royales a fair few times but that was only 'cos I knew the manager and it was all free baby.
As far as music to buy you basically need Stone Roses, as they were far an away the best of that ilk. If you wanna go back earlier and a bit darker, check out Magazine, they were from around the time of Joy Division. Whilst not dance they are very good musically.
808 State were very popular. It's kind of hard to remember names of specific dance artists for me, it's more just a memory of the tune and the place.
Stone Roses are the best mix of 'PROPER' music with a dance beat though, I'm surprised how many younger people have never really listened to them.
Dunno if that helps you at all.

Only Stone Roses song i've heard and really liked was "Fools gold" Essential songs to own by Stone Roses are: I Am The Resurection (the 8 minute version not the short single version) Waterfall This Is The One I Wanna Be Adored Sally Cinnamon She Bangs A Drum Elizabeth My Dear Fools Gold But if you buy the album Stone Roses you get 6 of those straight away. Stone Roses is one of the best albums of the 90's and one of the best albums ever. ICONIC To Quote Wiki The Stone Roses is the debut album by English indie rock band The Stone Roses, released on March 13, 1989 (1989-03-13). [1] The album is consistently rated highly in "best ever" album lists,[2][3] often tops charts of the best British albums. It established the band as the most important band in their genre for the time.[4] Get It Now
