Lets get a thread going with known information...
* The game is set in the Mojave wastelands, and Vegas itself is largely intact.
* You don't play a vault dweller. Instead, you're a courier that's saved by a former vault dweller.
* Three factions are at war in the game: Caesar's Legion, the New California Republic, and New Vegas.
* In addition to karma, reputation is tracked in the game. All three factions will either see you as good or bad toward them individually.
* Dialogue will be handled a bit differently, with skills having a bigger effect on conversation choices. Said Sawyer: "Each skill-based dialogue option has two different texts, one for high skill (which will result in success) and one for low skill (which will result in failure)."
* There will be a hardcore mode where the character must drink water to stay alive, ammo has weight, and healing isn't instant. Said Sawyer: "A lot of the things in Hardcore mode are also things that I personally wanted to play the game with. I realize not everyone does, but it's the only way I play it."
* There are special moves for melee weapons in VATS.
* The Hoover Dam is in the game and supplies electricity to the city.
* Area 51 may or may not be in the game. Said Bergman: "We did not show it or confirm whether or not it's in there. I'm not saying it is or isn't, just that we haven't said either way."

i'm dubious about getting caught up in the hype for this game because Bethesda aren't making it. fallout 3 was the best game i have ever EVER played. however the hardcore mode does appeal to me. we shall see...

RDCORE mode could be good - But sounds annoying - Like finding Malaria pills was in farcry2

It's made by Obsidian, barnett. They're ok, got a good reputation. And i'm sure Bethesda will "executive produce" or summat, to make sure it doesn't fail.
That said, Fallout 3 was "good" but didn't hook me. So i'll file this new one under "meh" and download a less-than-legal copy to try before i buy...

I WILL be buying the new Fallout -- That how try-before-you-buy works for me! Same with mass effect 3 and Dragon Age Expansion

Well, the game has been released in the US, and i'll be setting up a VPN later on to fool Steam into thinking i'm an American So far, reviews are excellent - -Everyone giving it 90/100 or above. They all comment on how excellent the story and RPG elements are. How you have to make difficult choices when choosing which faction to side with, and how hardcore mode improves the difficulty of the game, without just making enemies invincible. The only downside most reviews mention are the numerous bugs in the game -- The fact that it's written on an aging Obvilion engine does not help this fact.

Your Geekness has surpassed that of my own and reached new heights! if there was a week in between releases i could maybe understand... but not one day!! anyway... i'm not surprised about the bugs. Fallout 3 was the same and games are pushed out so quickly these days with enormous pressure on the development team to hit deadlines. i'm sure there will be patces here and there post release.

once you pop, you can't stop! and si, i assume you'll be hitting the northern quarter in the city centre afterwards. reminds me of good times. that city has some of the best indie / rock bars / nightlife ever. pisses all over leeds but leeds is still 1000x better than cannock lol.

I played 4 hours of this last night, and whilst it's full of bugs and glitches.. It's a bloody good game and addictive as hell.
Exploring a post-apocalypse Nevada dessert has never been so much fun. Story, acting and characters are great so far. It's a lot like Fallout3, except VATS is less overpowered, perks and stats have more defined affects and everything feels better tweaked.
The wasteland at the moment is a little bland, but can't wait till I get to Hoover Dam & the Vegas strip.
Highly recommended to anyone who loves a good RPG, as long as they don't mind a few (non-game breaking) bugs.

DUDE!!!! NO-One uses newsgroups anymore. How about a private bitTorrent tracker? www.bitgamer.com/details.php?id=33405Unfortunately, it's invite only, and I don't *think* I have any invites, being a n00b myself.

therein lies your fail ;D with the amount i download, i have no problem paying a small fee for newsgroup access with trouble free, super fast downloads. another plus is that SSL encryption keeps the traffic 'unknown' to my ISP, i wont have to worry about those annoying letters through the door... one of the HUGE problems with P2P in this day and age because to download you have to upload. gone are the days where i used to set my share to pretty much 'C:\' lol. good times
