Minecraft has sold a million copies. This is a game that’s only just entered Beta, that comes out later this year. A million. PC exclusive. All the money going directly to one very happy developer. A million. -- Source: www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/01/12/minecraft-enters-million-sellers-club/Most people would have brought it for 10 euros -- That's 10 MILLION Euros that one guy has made in the space of a year from a little indie game! Go big publisher, no mobile app store, just word of mouth!

its not quite 10 million all in his back pocket.
last time i checked, Notch uses cloud computing provided by amazon in order to host his servers (because its scalable). the more demand the game gets, the more it costs to host the update files, website, save games and process logins.
he also has an office now with a small team to help development.
so yeah, he's made loads of money but i imagine a good chunk of that will be spent on infrastructure. in the future i imagine the pricing system will also need to be revised when people actually stop buying the game. who knows maybe we will start seeing blueprints for aditional tools / weapons available to purchase?

Oh yeah - He desn't have 10 million in his pocket. Amazon storage and cloud computing is quite cheap though so won't cost LOADS.. But he'll also be paying Paypal fees (which by default are 3%, but i'm sure with his volume he's got a better deal). Also, as a proper company he'll be paying a high rate of tax in his homeland of Sweden. The current day by day sales EASILY pays the wages of his employees -- Sales aren't really slowing down.. and half of his team are working on a new game, whilst the rest will continue to develop Minecraft until there is no interest left in it. Stuart & I did some semi-epic building last night... and I also dug right down to the bottom of the map!

yeah multi player seems to be a lot better now. I can't believe we found a dungeon so soon lol.
If it wasnt for my stupid headphones fucking up i would have stayed on for longer last night. I'm up for another session at some point. I assume they have fixed the login issue now.

Taken from the Minecraftwiki. What's new in Beta 1.2
*Music Blocks (right click to tune, trigger to play) * 15 wool dyes * A new water dwelling mob (Octopus) * New tree types (Birch, Pine) * Reeds magically turned into sugar canes. They still make paper. * A bunch of new crafting recipes * One secret useful block (Dispenser) * One secret pretty block (Lapis Lazuli Ore/Block) * Cake * Sugar - Crafted from Sugar Cane * Default furnaces given new look * Bones added on drops (possibly only skeletons) * Bones can be crafted into Bonemeal. * New gray, light gray, and black sheep. Drop correspondingly colored wool.
Bugfixes:
* Paintings work in multiplayer * Disconnecting while riding no longer keeps the player in the world * A bunch more state is properly synched in multiplayer * Fixed colors going weird on PowerPC * Fixed a horrible chunk reload loop in singleplayer * Fixed most lighting bugs in newly generated SMP maps * Falling sand behaves better in SMP * Fixed a few crash on load level bugs * Jack-O-Lantern now has correct tooltip.

I've purchased a Minecraft server, and i'm awaiting the world to go live... However, I seem to have done it at the wrong time :s The server hosts are having a few problems at the moment properly hosting the latest version. Hopefully it'll be solved soon

You'll have to stick to the local server for now: 94.193.192.138
... Until they get the issues sorted.

So, i installed the ambiant occlusion mod, the HD texture fix and the tronic texture pack. The game looks a hell of a lot better Still got a purple furnace top though until tronic updates its texture pack i guess, but it's no big deal. Been trying to get FSAA working in the game, but to no avail yet.

They'll be a few revisions before they get it right with this patch.. Give it a couple of days... Does this new patch mean my home server isn't working?

And actually, i just reinstalled those mods (HD, Lighting) after the patch and they worked again, so...

yeah the update would overwrite the minecraft.jar file thus losing the code inserted for betterlight. reinstalling the patch will sometimes work as in your case. it just depends what notch has done to the code EDIT: DAMN... can't wait to play again lol. got to finish my epic tower that will eventually serve as a roller-coaster start point to the other towers

Apparently proper "mod support" is high on the list for Minecraft... So hopefully this'll come with the next update so that mods won't break with every update.
Ahh. Client & server patch - Server patch is/was optional
* Fixed various blocks acting really weird when placed (rails, torches, and more) * Optimized performance * Added a new painting that we forgot to include yesterday * Reduced spawn rates a bit * Fixed a whole pile of lighting bugs * No more ghosts at night * Added a temporary fix to get rid of chunk visibility errors
